FEDERATION SQUARE NEW HOME FOR TROPFEST
Movie Extra Tropfest is pleased to announce Federation Square as the new Melbourne host venue for one of Australia’s most iconic cultural events.
Movie Extra Tropfest - the world’s largest short film festival – will take place on Sunday 21 February 2010 at Federation Square, the cultural and entertainment hub of Melbourne.
John Polson, Director and Founder of Tropfest, said today:
I’m incredibly excited about our new Melbourne home. Melbourne’s interest and involvement in Tropfest has been growing exponentially over the past few years, culminating in the increasing number of Victorian entrants and finalists. Federation Square couldn’t be a better fit for us. It’s the perfect place for Melbourne’s film lovers to come together and celebrate the best of Australia’s up and coming film talent.Federation Square will be one of eight free, public, outdoor venues across Australia hosting the festival live via satellite:

Tropfest is Australia’s most prestigious short film festival and one of its most iconic cultural events. It is also the largest short film festival in the world. Founded in 1993 by film director John Polson as a small screening for family and friends at Sydney’s Tropicana Café, the festival now attracts a live national audience of more than 150,000 people. The event is hosted in Sydney with live satellite links to outdoor locations around the country. In addition, Movie Extra broadcasts the event reaching a television audience in excess of 300,000*. The short film competition is unique in that every film must be made specifically for Tropfest, will premiere at Tropfest and include the Tropfest Signature Item (TSI), which changes each year. 16 Finalists are selected from an average 650 entries. Tropfest has recently expanded internationally to include a competition and festival in North America, Tropfest New York, and also hosts a number of screenings in major cities including Bangkok, Beijing, London and Toronto.
